The mixer exploits the principle of asymmetry created by two cylinders of unequal length. As the mixer rotates, materials go from division to combination and back. Because the material planes differ, transverse forces arise and push materials into lateral exchange. Each rotation causes ~25% of material to flow from one cylinder to the other, achieving uniform mixing through simultaneous radial and lateral motion.
